Carbon Initiative
"The world today faces several challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, air, water and soil pollution"

Because global warming is a reality
The planet is warming by 0.2°C per decade as a result of human activity.
Because humans are responsible for climate change
Human activities, and in particular fossil energy consumption (oil, gas, coal), artificially increase greenhouse gases’ air concentration and, consequently, accentuate global warming.
Because Djibouti is one of the most exposed countries to global warming
Djibouti is one of the most impacted countries by global warming effects, exposing vulnerable population to natural disasters and food insecurity.
Because the international community is committed to tackling climate change. Most of the countries are taking measures to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions
The Paris Agreement is a historic commitment adopted by 196 countries to limit global warming to 1.5°c above pre-industrial levels. Most of the countries have defined long-term low-carbon development strategies.
Because Djibouti has the right and the duty to take measures to limit greenhouse gas emissions on its territory
The Sovereign Carbon Initiative aims to promote and develop social, environmental and energy impact programs, for the benefit of a sustainable economic development and the protection of the most vulnerable population exposed to the consequences of global warming.

With these observations, the Presidency of the Republique of Djibouti launched the Sovereign Carbon Initiative
It is time to move from rhetoric to action by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Ismaïl Omar Guelleh
President of the Republic of Djibouti
